Emil Forsberg has admitted that RB Leipzig's first half of the season hasn't been "good enough".

'Die Roten Bullen' sit 10th in the Bundesliga table and have been transferred to the Europa League knockout round after finishing third in a Champions League group also consisting of Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Club Brugge.

Despite Leipzig's struggles so far this season, Forsberg still believes he and his teammates can seal a Champions League place under new head coach Domenico Tedesco, who replaced Jesse Marsch earlier this month.

"We want to be there [in the Champions League] again next season. That is important for us and the club. We belong there if you look at our squad, but in the first half of the season we didn't show our potential. That was not good enough. We players also have to look at ourselves," said Forsberg.

The 30-year-old added that he's optimistic key players such as Dani Olmo and Christopher Nkunku will stay in January.

The club have already said that not much will happen in the winter. We're on the right track now, the guys feel comfortable," said Forsberg, who is expected to be out until February due to a hamstring injury.

When asked about his contract expiring in 2025, Forsberg jokingly said:

"When my contract runs out, I'll be 34 years old. Then maybe I'll take over as coach together with Kevin Kampl. Young coaches are, after all, very much in demand in Leipzig."
