The German Bundesliga's all-time greatest "Super Sub" looks likely to end his career in Breisgau. The 33-year-old former national team player extended his expiring contract with the club he has represented since 2015. As is common with SC Freiburg management, details of the deal were not disclosed.

"We're very happy about this extension of this special and successful collaboration," SCF personnel boss Jochen Saier noted in a statement, "Nils has done great things for the Sport Club over the past seven years. Nils is simply great for us on and off the pitch."

Saier's words constitute something of an understatement. Petersen remains the club's record goal-scorer with 99 tallies. The Wernigerode-native also broke the Bundesliga record for most goals scored by a substitute in early 2019. The rate at which he's scored goals of the bench since renders him almost un-catchable. Petersen now has 30 tallies as a sub.

"My sights are set on the future and I want to achieve a lot more with this team," Petersen said in his own statement, "I'm thus delighted with the contract extension and the tasks that stand before us."

Petersen will get a chance to score his 100th goal in Freiburg colors against former club Bayern this weekend.

Over in the country's capital, there was more contract extension news. Veteran defender Robin Knoche, who had been heavily linked with SV Werder Bremen, opted to extend his expiring deal with die Eisernen. While the 29-year-old's links with Bremen had largely been refuted, a renewed committed to the Köpenickers still came as a surprise.

"After we had 'objective-oriented talks', Robin should continue to serve as a key component of our Bundesliga team in the coming years," FCU sporting director Oliver Ruhnert noted in a statement, "His will to perform and consistency have already made him a staple."

Knoche, who arrived from VfL Wolfsburg in the summer of 2020, has started and played the full 90 minutes in all but one of Union Berlin's league fixtures this year.
