Wolfsburg vs. Schalke 04 preview: Both sides aiming for first league win of the season

Wolfsburg and Schalke will both be searching for their first victories of the Bundesliga season when they face off at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday.

Wolfsburg

Niko Kovac is still looking for his first Bundesliga win as Wolfsburg boss after taking a point from his opening two league games

Wolfsburg began the season with a 1-0 DFB-Pokal victory over Carl Zeiss Jena before they began the campaign with a 2-2 draw against newly promoted Werder Bremen.

After goals from Lukas Nmecha and Josua Guilavogui helped Wolfsburg take a point off of Werder, they turned their attention to a tough away encounter against Bayern Munich. Die Wölfe fell to a 2-0 defeat after Jamal Musiala and Thomas Müller grabbed a goal apiece in the first half.

After taking one point from their opening two league games, Wolfsburg will attempt to claim their first league victory of the season when they face Schalke on Saturday.

Facing another newly promoted side at home, Wolfsburg will look to extend their unbeaten home Bundesliga run to five matches.
Teams News

Patrick Wimmer will miss out for the hosts after picking up a head injury in training during the week. Yannick Gerhardt, Bartol Franjic, Jonas Wind and Kilian Fischer are also sidelined for Sunday's contest.

Schalke 04

Like their hosts, Schalke are still searching for their first league win of the season. They began the campaign with a comfortable 5-0 victory over Bremer SV, but were unable to take anything from their first game back in the Bundesliga, losing 3-1 to Köln on the opening weekend.

Schalke seemed set to lose consecutive league matches despite taking the lead against Borussia Mönchengladbach through Rodrigo Zalazar. Gladbach turned the game on its head in the second half scoring two goals in six minutes, but just as it looked like Schalke were heading towards a defeat, they were awarded a penalty in stoppage time, which was dispatched by Marius Bülter.

Frank Kramer will hope he can claim his first league win as Schalke boss this weekend as his side tries to end a run of three consecutive defeats in Bundesliga meetings with Wolfsburg.
Team News

Schalke have no fresh injury concerns ahead of Saturday's contest, although they are still without Dominick Drexler, who is suspended after being sent off on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga season.
