Bayern München lead the race for the signature of Schalke 04's Alexander Nübel, according to Bild.

Schalke are doing all they can to hold on to the highly-rated keeper and have offered to extend his contract which expires at the end of the season.

But a move to Bayern is looking more and more likely for the goalkeeper, as per the report.

The question is what Nübel's arrival at Allianz Arena would mean for Manuel Neuer who is under contract with the Bavarians until 2021.

Nübel probably wouldn't want to wait a season for his chance in Munich. On the other hand, Neuer would hardly accept a bench role.

Bayern could potentially send Nübel out on loan at another Bundesliga club for the 2020/21 season. The 23-year-old would then be lined up to take over the role as first-choice keeper from Neuer in 2021.

Another possibility for the German champions is to simply sell Neuer in the summer of 2020.

However, Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said a few weeks ago that he could imagine extending the contract of the 33-year-old who is said to be keen on staying as well. Nübel's potential arrival could change that, though.
