Hertha were trailing 3-0 after the first half at ESPRIT Arena, but bounced back to draw 3-3.
"The first half was chaotic and a complete failure for us. It was unacceptable. Getting a point was very important," Skjelbred told DAZN after the game.
Fortuna goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier said:
"We ended up bring way too passive. That's a real shame."
Hertha sit 13th in the table - six points ahead of 16th-placed Fortuna.
