The former Bayer Leverkusen coach takes over the job after Martin Schmidt was relieved of his duties on Monday. He has put pen to paper on a deal until 2022.
"We are convinced that we have found a perfect match for FCA in Heiko Herrlich. He's an absolute expert, who knows the Bundesliga, both as a coach and from his time as a player. Therefore, we are sure that we will be back on the road to success with Heiko Herrlich," said Augsburg boss Stefan Reuter in a statement.
The 48-year-old worked as coach for Bayer Leverkusen from the summer of 2017 until December 2018.
