Pizarro explains decision to wear number 4
Claudio Pizarro has explained why he has decided to wear shirt number 4 at Werder Bremen.
39-year-old Claudio Pizarro recently joined Werder Bremen for his fifth spell at the club, signing a one-year deal.
The aging striker, who will turn 40 in October, will wear number 4 at the back - a rather peculiar number for a striker. Now, Pizarro has explained his decision.
"It's quite simple. The other numbers I wanted, like number 24 or 14, weren't free. That's why I took number four," Pizarro said at a press conference.
At his most recent club, FC Köln, Pizarro wore the number 39 shirt - possible as a reference to his age.
The 39-year-old has previous worn number 10, 24 and 14 for Werder Bremen. Pizarro joined the club for the first time in 1999 and returned on loan in 2008 after playing for Bayern München and Chelsea. In 2009, Werder signed him on a permanent deal, but he left again to join Bayern München in 2012.
Pizarro was re-signed in 2015 and played two further seasons for Werder before joining FC Köln in 2017. Now, he's back at the Weserstadion for the fifth time.
