Bayer Leverkusen captain Lars Bender admits he has been thinking about retiring from football.

"There are thoughts about whether this will be the last season," Bender, whose contract expires next year, said in a recent interview, according to Kicker.

The 31-year-old had a hard time while spending the majority of the second half of the season on the sidelines due to injuries, which hit him like "a stab to the heart".

"Obviously, it leaves scars. Naturally, you're worried about the consequences."

Bender joined Leverkusen from 1860 München in 2009.
