Schalke 04's contract talks with Suat Serdar have been put on ice for the time being, according to Kicker.

Months ago, the parties were in good talks over an extension of Serdar's deal, which expires in 2022.

But a contract extension no longer appears to be an issue due the Schalke's decline in the second half of last season and the fact that the club have recently introduced a salary cap of €2.5 million per season.

Serdar has said he wants European football and is hopeful of a call-up for Germany's Euro 2021 squad.

Instead of signing a new deal, a move away from the club could now be on the cards for the midfielder. If not now, then next year, at which point he will have just one year left on his contract.
