Report:
Marc Roca joins Bayern, movement on potential Javi Martinez departure

Much as was the case last year, it looks as if German giants FC Bayern München are going to complete several last-minute moves. Marc Roca is in Germany for his medical. Javi Martinez may also be on his way out.

FC Bayern München quickly revived their interest in Spain's Marc Roca and are said to have secured the services of the RCD Espanyol 23-year-old anchor for €9 million. So it is reported in German footballing magazine Kicker and confirmed by "SkyGermany", "Sport1", and the Spanish "Sport.es".

Spanish news sources, most notably Radio Popular, claim that the transfer fee is much higher; possibly in excess of €11 to €13 million. All sources confirm the possibility of bonus payments that could push the total to €15 million.

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Roca is already in Germany for his medical. Bayern trainer Hans Dieter Flick evaded questions about the new transfer on Saturday morning, but all but confirmed the arrival by wryly remarking with a smile that he "can't confirm or refute anything."

Roca was a target of Bayern last summer and even agreed to terms with the club in July 2019. Espanyol nixed the deal as they didn't wish to entertain offers below their player's €40 million release clause. The Spanish club's relegation this past season evidently altered the dynamic.

The procurement of a reliable younger defensive midfielder may also signal movement in the stalled effort to move 32-year-old club veteran Javi Martinez. The latest reports indicate that the transfer to Athletic Club has essentially fallen through. The veteran may still depart on a free transfer, possibly to Saudi Arabia.
