Dayot Upamecano's RB Leipzig future 'open', Julian Nagelsmann to stay long term

RB Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff says he hopes Dayot Upamecano will stay beyond next summer and plays down speculation linking Julian Nagelsmann with Dortmund.
RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has reacted to rumors linking Dayot Upamecano and head coach Julian Nagelsmann with moves away from the club.

Having attracted interest from a host of top clubs, Upamecano put speculation about his future on hold last summer when he signed a contract extension until 2023.

But since the 22-year-old centre-back's new deal is understood to include a €42 million release clause that will be active from next summer, Mintzlaff admits he doesn't know how long he will stay.

"Everything is open, and I would be happy if he stayed with us," Mintzlaff told Sky.

Meanwhile, rumors that RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann has attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund are 'not an issue' for Mintzlaff.

"Nagelsmann made a conscious decision in favor of RB very early on," he said about the 33-year-old coach, who joined RB Leipzig from Hoffenheim last year.

"In the first year and a half, he made it to the Champions League semifinals and finished third in the Bundesliga. Now he has managed to go through from a very difficult group and reach the round of 16.

"There's no reason for him to pack his suitcase after such a short time."
