Southgate explains decision to leave Dier out of England squad

England manager Gareth Southgate has explained why he decided to leave Bayern Munich's Eric Dier out of his England squad for Euro 2024.

Harry Kane was the only Bundesliga representative in England's Euro 2024 preliminary squad announced on Tuesday, with his Bayern Munich teammate Eric Dier left out.

Up until the announcement, there had been speculation as to whether Dier would receive a call-up after a strong second half of the season for Bayern.

But as England manager Gareth Southgate explained, it wasn't enough to convince him to include the 30-year-old in his squad.

“He's played very well for Bayern and I know that they are very, very happy with him,” Southgate explained, according to The Athletic.

“We think he's just behind the other guys we've selected. We watch every game. He obviously played well in some big matches in the Champions League as well, so we were conscious of that. But we've assessed that across the board.”

Dier made 19 appearances for Bayern following his January move from Tottenham.
