Three options for Hummels: Dortmund veteran opens up on future

Mats Hummels has spoken in detail about his thoughts on his uncertain future.

Will Mats Hummels extend his expiring contract with Borussia Dortmund, find a new employer or retire from football?

That's the big question ahead of Borussia Dortmund's Champions League final against Real Madrid on Saturday, with the 35-year-old centre-back yet to make a decision.

"I want to let it all sink in afterwards. I'm curious to see what the game does to me. Then there will be a decision - sometime in June. One day I'll feel what I want. Then I'll say out loud what I want to do and see how it feels," Hummels told Sport Bild.

"In terms of feeling, retiring is the least likely scenario at the moment," he added.

If Hummels does decide to seek a new adventure elsewhere, it will be within the borders of Europe, as he wants to stay close to his son Ludwig, who lives with his ex-wife Cathy in Munich.

“Ludwig plays a very big role in this. That's why I say very clearly: adventurous moves like to the United States are out of the question for me.”

However, a move to Italy, where he has reportedly attracted interest from AC Milan and Juventus, doesn't seem to be out of the question.

“What I'm ruling out is a move far abroad, to the USA or something like that. If I leave BVB, I'll go somewhere close to Europe.”
