"It was really good for the spirit" - Gündogan reflects on stalemate with Switzerland

Speaking to German media outlet ZDF at full-time, Ilkay Gündogan shared his thoughts on Germany's 1-1 draw with Switzerland.

Niclas Füllkrug struck in the 92nd-minute to salvage the all-important point that ensured Germany advance to the Round of 16 as Group A winners.

Die Mannschaft captain Ilkay Gündogan expressed his delight in the aftermath as Germany and Switzerland drew 1-1 in Frankfurt.

"Honestly, I don't think it could have gone any better in the end. It was a very tough game for us [Germany].

"We had good chances [to score] and equalised very late to win the group. We can also benefit from the importance of the equaliser in the next game," Gündogan added.

The point ensures Germany will face whoever finishes in second place in Group C which includes England, Denmark, Serbia, and Slovenia - all of which are still in contention to advance.

"Today was about somehow holding our own. In terms of play, it wasn't at the level we're known for," the German captain continued.

"We perhaps also hit the ball forward too early without being prepared [to attack]. Of course we would have liked to have won the game again and worked our magic.

"But that [result] can build up our strength for the next few weeks. In the end, we won the group. It [the late equaliser] was really good for the spirit," the 33-year-old concluded.

Germany can discover who their Round of 16 will be on Tuesday evening. The final results of England vs Slovenia and Denmark vs Serbia will reveal who secures second place in Group C and subsequently face Julian Nagelsmann's side in Dortmund.
