Bühl brace as Bayern thump Wolfsburg to win Frauen-Supercup

With the offseason over and the preseason friendlies completed, it was a return to competitive football for FC Bayern München and VfL Wolfsburg - as they faced each other in the 2026/27 DFB Supercup Frauen on a sunny, 34-degree Saturday evening in Ingolstadt.

FC Bayern completed the double in 2025/26, winning both the Frauen-Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal Frauen - VfL Wolfsburg finished runners-up in both competitions. In all three meetings between the two during the course of the season, twice in the Bundesliga and in the DFB-Pokal Final, Bayern defeated Wolfsburg and outscored them 11-2 in total (3-1, 4-1, 4-0).

The two sides have also met in both of the last two Frauen-Supercup finals, with Bayern taking both encounters (2024, 1-0; 2025, 4-2). Overall, Bayern have won five of their last six meetings against Wolfsburg, with the latter’s last victory having come by a 2-0 result at Volkswagen Arena on October 12, 2024.

Wolfsburg, in grey, kicked off the match, with Cora Zicai punting the ball into the left side of the Bayern half. Wolfsburg would go left to right in the first half, while Bayern, in red, would go right to left when on the attack.

It did not take too long for Wolfsburg to generate the first chance of the evening. In the second minute, Peddemors played the ball short to Zicai on the left side of the Bayern half, allowing the latter to find some open space at the edge of the box. The Freiburg-born forward, kicking off her second season with the Wölfinnen, blasted the ball over a jumping Ena Mahmutovic and well over the bar for a goal kick to Bayern.

Three minutes later, Peddemors would find Svenja Huth on the right side of the Bayern half; the 35-year-old veteran forward then crossed the ball far-post into the left side of the Wolfsburg goal area. Zicai got on the end of it and launched a shot towards the bottom-right corner, but Stine Ballisager got in front of the ball and deflected it off her right leg; the rebound landed back to her for another shot off the Danish defender for an eventually cleared corner.

In the ninth minute, Sarai Linder and Janina Minge teamed up to knock the ball away from Pernille Harder in the centre of the Bayern half. Minge started an onside run towards the centre of the box before finding Zicai to her left. Zicai’s following shot made its way past two Bayern defenders before deflecting off the right leg of Mahmutovic; Ballisager cleared the ensuing rebound for a corner to the hosts. Linder attempted a half-volley on the ensuing set piece after a cross from Huth was cleared by Magdalena Eriksson, but her attempt rolled wide of the bottom-left corner.

Bayern started to show some promise in the sixteenth minute, starting with a 3v3 counterattack in which Klara Bühl passed short to her right to Pernille Harder, who in turn found Jovana Damnjanović on her right. Damnjanović’s cross into the centre of the box was cleared by a towering header from Camilla Küver; Bayern maintained possession and eventually, the ball landed at the feet of Bühl on the left side of the box, but she lost her footing in a challenge with Huth, and Huth then deflected the ball off Katharina Naschenweng to end the attack and allow Wolfsburg to regroup with a goal kick.

Following the first half hydration break, Wolfsburg would see another opportunity in the twenty-seventh minute. In the centre of the ground, Zicai started a counterattacking run before sending a long ball to Huth on the right side of the Bayern third, close to the box; the cross from the latter was hoofed a bit too far for Linder’s reach, but eventually, Linder was able to knock the ball down and continue play. Wolfsburg maintained possession for the next minute and a half, after which Zicai and Huth would connect on another scoring opportunity - this time, a header from the latter on the former’s cross into the right side of the goal area, sent just above Mahmutovic but off the side netting.

In the thirty-first minute, a pass within the Wolfsburg half from Küver could not reach Minge, and was intercepted by Arianna Caruso instead. The Italian midfielder played the ball to her right to Harder - but Küver, hoping to redeem herself for the pass, unfortunately tripped up the Danish attacking midfielder on a standing challenge. Two minutes later, Bühl’s cross into the centre of the box on the free kick was headed towards the top-left corner by Damnjanović, into the hands of Johannes.

While clutching the ball with both gloves, Johannes’ right foot caught the netting, causing her to crash into the left post and accidentally holding the ball over the line before going down. Head referee Angelika Söder blew the whistle - which Wolfsburg initially thought was for offside on Linda Dallmann - but there was no interference of any sort from the 31-year-old midfielder, and the goal stood.

The shock of the decision did not stop Wolfsburg from pressing in the following minutes, however; and seven minutes from halftime, they would come extremely close to an equaliser. On the left side of the Bayern half, Zicai weaved her way around Ballisager before tapping the ball past Mahmutovic, off the outside of the left post and away from danger.

Bayern came very close to doubling the lead before halftime - as on the right side of the Wolfsburg third, Ballisager lifted the ball slightly, above Huth and Küver before reaching Damnjanović. Lieske Carleer, in her first competitive match for the Wölfinnen since joining from Dutch side FC Twente in the summer, did just enough to hoof the ball away for a corner to Die Roten. On the following corner, Alara Şehitler bumped into the right shoulder of Camilla Küver with her elbow, causing the latter to go down; there was a bit of concern from Stephan Lerch’s side, but fortunately, it was not serious and after a minute on the touchline, she returned to the field.

By the time she returned, however, Wolfsburg cleared the following corner but Bayern won a free kick close to the box after a Peddemors handball that prevented a pass to Bühl. The ensuing free kick from the Haßfurt-born forward went past the large group swarming the Wolfsburg goal area, underneath the gloves of Johannes and into the bottom-right corner to double the lead in the last of four minutes of first half stoppage time.

That was the last notable play of the first half - and after a 15-minute break, the second half would start much the same way that the opening term finished. Just a minute in, a long ball from Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir, from the right side of the Bayern half into the midfield, was headed away by Linder while in a contest for possession with Dallmann. Unfortunately for Linder, the ball landed at the feet of Damnjanović, who knocked the ball to her left to Alara Şehitler; Şehitler then threaded the ball to her left to Bühl, who curled the ball around Thea Bjelde, past Johannes and into the bottom-right corner to almost certainly secure Bayern the victory.

For much of the remaining 40 minutes, Bayern would slow down the pace of the match, playing attacking football from the central areas while also maintaining a form of defensive conservatism - with their 4-2-3-1 turning into a 5-4-1 when managing Wolfsburg counters. José Barcala’s side won a corner in the fifty-fourth minute after an attempted pass into the centre of the box from Caruso was smothered by Huth and Linder, cleared away by the latter. Bühl’s cross on the corner reached Eriksson, but her header went just over the bar and out for a goal kick to the Wölfinnen.

Ten minutes later, Wolfsburg would see a decent chance on the other side of the field. From just inside the Bayern half, Peddemors’ long ball into the right side of the box landed in front of Huth, whose right-footed attempt was denied by the right leg of a charging Mahmutovic. The rebound landed in front of recent signing Lara Prašnikar, in her first competitive Wolfsburg match - however, the 28-year-old Slovenian international’s half-volley went metres wide of the bottom-right corner.

In the sixty-eighth minute, a pass from Caruso, with lots of space in the centre of the Wolfsburg half, set up Damnjanović at the edge of the box; a powerful right-footed shot from the Serbian forward went off the right hand of a leaping Johannes, away from the top-right corner and just over the bar for an unsuccessful corner to the Bavarians which came just after the second hydration break.

With fifteen minutes remaining, Wolfsburg would prepare another strong counterattack, as Zicai set up a long ball into the right side of the box; Huth gathered it and almost instantly powered a shot towards the centre of the goal, which Mahmutovic denied with both hands. Prašnikar had a near-perfect lane to take full advantage of the rebound, but Barbara Dunst would get in front of her and deflect the ball off the right kneecap, allowing it to ultimately land back into the gloves of the Duisburg-born keeper.

This would be followed by a longshot from the weak foot of substitute Sophia Kleinherne in the eighty-third minute, deflected off the right hand of a leaping Mahmutovic and out for a corner to Wolfsburg - one that was eventually unsuccessful after a series of clearances.

The full-time whistle would go soon after, with FC Bayern claiming their third consecutive Supercup Frauen and their eighth consecutive title in all German women’s football competitions (Frauen-Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal Frauen, DFB Supercup Frauen). Thanks to a powerful effort in the first fifty minutes on a goal from Jovana Damnjanović and another two from Klara Bühl, they finished victors over VfL Wolfsburg by a 3-0 result in Ingolstadt.

Bayern will open their Frauen-Bundesliga campaign with the primetime match on Friday evening, visiting 1. FC Union Berlin at Stadion An der Alten Försterei at 18.00 (CET). As for VfL Wolfsburg, they will visit Max-Morlock-Stadion on Saturday to face 1. FC Nürnberg, with kickoff on that match set for 14.00 (CET).
