Dortmund's Papadopoulos signs with Swiss outfit

German-Greek defensive midfielder/cente back Antonios Papadopoulos' departure from Borussia Dortmund has been officially confirmed.

Dortmund reservist Antonios Papadopoulos will be departing his long-time German club on his expiring contract. The 24-year-old Bad Cannstatt native made over 140 appearances for BVB II over the past three years, but was unable to break into the Schwarzgelben first team. Papadopoulos was selected by BVB trainer Edin Terzic for the senior match-day squad five times this season, yet made only two Bundesliga appearances.

With a total of five BVB senior deployments, two Pokal appearances, and even minutes logged in two Champions' League fixtures, Papadopoulos was often linked with a move inside German football. The €1-million-valued defender has instead opted to join FC Lugano in the Swiss top flight. Papadopoulos will play alongside former Bayern defensive prospect Lars Lukas Mai, who signed with Lugano in the summer of 2022.
