The club officially announced Polanski’s departure after a run of three defeats from their opening three fixtures, during which they conceded 12 goals. His exit brings his tenure to an end after just under a year in charge.
Attention will now turn towards finding his replacement, with the new head coach tasked with generating some positive feeling around the club and guiding them away from the wrong end of the table. In the early stages of their search, Bild has named former Karlsruher SC boss Christian Eichner as a candidate. Eichner left the 2. Bundesliga side at the end of last season following a six-year reign.
Previously, the also-unattached Ole Werner, most recently of RB Leipzig, Horst Steffen, most recently of Werder Bremen, and Alexander Blessin, most recently of St. Pauli, had also been linked with Gladbach.
Assistant coach Jan-Moritz Lichte will take over on an interim basis, with the bottom-of-the-table side set to face Mainz 05 on Saturday.
