Hoeneß wishes VfB II luck in promotion quest: "The lads have a sensational opportunity."
While the final match of the season usually brings with it experimental deployments for most clubs, VfB Stuttgart trainer Sebastian Hoeneß revealed on Friday that he would be leaving most of the promising VfB II talents with the reserves this weekend. The reason for this is that Stuttgart's second team have the opportunity to earn promotion to the 3. Liga.
The Cannstatter youths find themselves entangled in a tight fight with their local rivals in a bid to finish first in the Regionalliga Südwest. Everything comes down to the final match-day for VfB II and Degerloch's Stuttgarter Kickers. Hoeneß' Juniors host TSG 1899 Hoffenheim II while the Kickers travel to FC 08 Homburg. Simultaneous kickoffs are set for 14:00.
"The lads have the opportunity - and that's sensational - to be promoted to the 3rd division," Hoeneß noted at his Friday presser, "They [the VfB II talents] are needed there. In this case, that's more important than a squad nomination or a brief relief appearance as it could mean developing at a much higher level next year."
Hoeneß' senior Stuttgart side wrap up Bundesliga play with a home fixture against Gladbach set for a 15:30 kickoff. Hoeneß revealed at the presser that he would be watching a Regionalliga live stream from his place on the bench. The fate of VfB II shall be known before the top-tier fixture reaches half-time.
