Leverkusen to sign Matip on a free?

Sky Germany's Patrick Berger reports that German champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen are interested in brining center back Joël Mat back to German football.

Germany's red company team are reportedly interested in adding an experienced central defender to their roster ahead of next season. The search has led to a familiar name. Former FC Schalke 04 center back Jöel Matip is available on a free transfer after his contract with Liverpool F.C. expired this past summer. If signed, the 32-year-old would be by far the most experienced CB on the Bayer 04 Leverkusen roster.

Matip contested a total of 194 Bundesliga games during his seven total seasons as a Schalke professional. He also netted 17 times for die Königsblauen in the league and twice in the Pokal. Leverkusen recently struck gold with a free transfer last year with the acquisition of Spanish wingback Alejandro Grimaldo. Matip hasn't made a competitive appearance for Liverpool in the current calendar year, but still maintains an estimated market worth of €8 million.
