Mainz striker Szalai set for knee surgery

FSV Mainz 05 confirmed on Monday that veteran striker Adam Szalai would undergo meniscus surgery on Tuesday.
Bo Svensson has one less option in attack after it was determined that veteran Hungarian striker Adam Szalai needs arthroscopic surgery, The 33-year-old exited the weekend duel against Freiburg at halftime. He had been hobbling following a tough challenge in the 32nd minute.

Szalai, relegated to the practice squad by previous Nullfünfter trainer Achim Beierlorzer, was brought back by current head-coach Svensson when the Danish trainer took over the team last January. He made 12 appearances (8 starts) for Mainz during the Rückrunde, scoring one.

Svensson has started the veteran, who also represented his country during the European Championships, two times through five rounds this year. Szalai scored in round three against Fürth.

Session still has many options for his preferred two-striker set. Karim Onsiwo, Jae-Sung Lee, and Jean-Paul Boetius can all start in the role. Mainly, however, the news probably means that recently acquired Danish forward Marcus Ingvartsen may find his way into the starting XI.
