VfL Wolfsburg have targeted RB Salzburg centre-back Jerome Onguene, according to Foot Mercato.

Unless he signs a contract extension, the 23-year-old will be available on a free transfer at the end of the season, at which point his current deal expires.

Onguene has made nine appearances for Salzburg this season and was in the starting eleven when the Austrian champions beat Wolfsburg 3-1 in the Champions League earlier this month.

Wolfsburg currently have five centre-backs to choose between, with Maxence Lacroix, John Anthony Brooks, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Micky van de Ven and Anselmo Garcia McNulty competing for playing time.

Accordingly, there is no urgent need to sign a centre-back at the moment, but that could change, with Maxence Lacroix and John Anthony Brooks both linked with moves away from the club.

Onguene has previously been on the books at Stuttgart, but he never made his debut for the German club's first team.
