VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Josuha Guilavogui has admitted he wanted to leave Volkswagen Arena last summer.

Guilvaogui has started every game under Florian Kohfeldt so far, with the new Wolfsburg coach understood to see the 31-year-old as one of his key players.

In contrast, Guilavogui didn't play much last season, and it didn't look like his situation would improve after Mark van Bommel succeeded Oliver Glasner as coach in the summer.

After being replaced by Koen Casteels as captain, Guilavogui was limited to just nine minutes on the pitch in the Bundesliga opener against Bochum. Fearing that another tough season was ahead of him, the Frenchman told the club he wanted to leave.

"After the Bochum game, I went to [sporting director] Marcel Schäfer and told him, 'I think it's time to leave the club. I don't want to experience another season like the last one," Guilavogui told Sport Bild.

"The six months in which I did not play were the hardest of my career. I only came on the pitch for five or ten minutes. That is too little for me. As a defensive midfielder, I can't show that I have to start next time if I only get short cameos."

According to Guilavogui, there were inquiries for him, but nothing concrete emerged, and that's why he stayed.
