Watzke: Dortmund have no transfer limit

Borussia Dortmund have no limit when it comes to transfer sums, says BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Back in 2016, Borussia Dortmund paid €30 million to sign André Schürrle from VfL Wolfsburg. The BVB have never paid more than that for a player, but that could change in the future, says the club's CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke.

"If we take in €100 million, we can also spend a lot, very much. We set no limit with regard to that," he told Bild and continued:

"The absolute number is not decisive for me. What is important is that our income and expenditure are in balance over a long period of time. We definitely want to stay debt free."

However, Watzke underlines that he still wants Dortmund to rely on players from the club's own youth department.

"Six players from our current squad come from our own youth ranks. We have to continue working on that. It would be nice if we could bring back a Dortmund boy from the youth team, who then starts a great career with us, in the near future - just like Marco Reus or Mario Götze," he said.

Borussia Dortmund made the biggest sale in the history of German football when Ousmane Dembele was sold to FC Barcelona for €115 million in the summer of 2017.
