Per Mertesacker feels the English Premier League is 'ahead of' the German Bundesliga in terms of quality and excitement.

According to the former German international, the Premier League is more attractive than the Bundesliga - among other things because the English teams have more money and bigger stars on the pitch as well as on the coaching bench.

"Six clubs compete for the top four places here. In terms of excitement, the Premier League offers more than the Bundesliga in any case," Mertesacker said in an interview with Kicker.

The 34-year-old, who now works as an academy manager at Arsenal, also feels there are big differences in terms of playing style.

"In England, it's all about tempo football and running up and down the pitch. In Germany, it's more tactically controlled," he explained.

There will be three clashes between teams from England and Germany in the Champions League round of 16. Schalke 04 will be up against Manchester City, Tottenham face Borussia Dortmund while Liverpool take on Bayern München.
