Schalke 04 coach Domenico Tedesco's job is hanging by a thread after Saturday's 0-4 defeat to Fortuna Düsseldorf.

But it appears Schalke will not make a decision on whether they want to keep or release the coach until the new head of sport, Jochen Schneider, has officially begun his work at the club next week.

"The head of sport hasn't taken office yet. He will say something about it on Tuesday," Schalke 04 boss Clemens Tönnies told Bild.

After Saturday's disappointing defeat, Tedesco went down to the stands to meet the frustrated Schalke fans.

"I apologised to the fans for the performance. That was the least we could do in this kind of situation. The fans were understandably frustrated and aggressive. I can appreciate where the Ultras were coming from," Tedesco said at a press conference on Saturday, as quoted by the club.

Schalke are sitting 14th in the Bundesliga with 23 points after 24 league games - their worst points haul in 36 years.
