It caused a lot of surprise when German national team coach Joachim Löw today announced that Manchester City winger Leroy Sané isn't a part of his final World Cup squad.

Löw said he preferred Bayer Leverkusen's Julian Brandt over Sané while Julian Draxler, Marco Reus and Thomas Müller were all safe.

"It was a very close decision between him and Julian Brandt which was made in favor of Brandt. Draxler, Reus and Müller were safe. Leroy has huge talent. He will be back again from September. He hasn't really delivered in national team matches yet," Löw told journalists and added:

"It was tight. They both possess great qualities and are good dribblers. Julian Brandt played at the Confederations Cup, he has played good matches and performed well at practice."

Bernd Leno, Jonathan Tah and Nils Petersen were also axed from the World Cup squad, and along with Sané they were informed of Löw's decision this morning.

"I talked to all four players this morning and spoke with the team council afterwards. The disappintment was big, but that was expected. It's like arriving at the check-in at the airport, but not getting on the plane to Moscow," Löw said.
