Germany seal Euro 2020 place with clear win over Belarus
Toni Kroos bagged a brace and Manuel Neuer saved a penalty as Germany sealed a spot at Euro 2020 with a 4-0 win over Belarus.
Germany secured qualification for Euro 2020 with a 4-0 victory over Belarus at Borussia-Park in Mönchengladbach on Saturday evening.
The home side very dominant from the start of the game, but initially struggled to create clear-cut chances against a Belarus team who sat deep with the hope of hitting the Germans on the counter.
Igor Statsevich actually came close to giving Belarus a shock lead with 40 minutes on the clock, but his curling effort from the edge of the area was kept out by Manuel Neuer who made an excellent save.
Shortly after, Matthias Ginter broke the deadlock for Germany, scoring a cheeky back-heel goal after he was set up well by Serge Gnabry.
Leon Goretzka doubled the lead after 49 minutes, smashing the ball into the lower corner of the net from the edge of the box following a corner kick.
Six minutes later, Toni Kroos made it 3-0 as he placed the ball into the corner with a nice shot from just outside the area.
Belarus could have pulled one back after 75 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after a foul by Robin Koch, who made his second appearance for 'Die Mannschaft', but Manuel Neuer saved Igor Stasevich's attempt from the penalty spot.
Instead, Germany added further to their lead after 83 minutes when Toni Kroos took a few touches inside the penalty area before smashing the ball into the net to make it 4-0 with his second goal of the game.
Germany now sit top of Group C - two points clear of the Netherlands who were held to a 0-0 draw by Northern Ireland.
On Tuesday, Joachim Löw's troops face Northern Ireland in their last game of the Euro 2020 qualification.
