RB Leipzig tell Dayot Upamecano to sign a new deal or leave

Dayot Upamecano has been given an ultimatum by RB Leipzig: Sign a new contract or leave this summer.
RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has told Dayot Upamecano to either sign a new contract or leave the club at the end of the season.

Upamecano is out of contract in 2021, and Mintzlaff says the club can't let the 21-year-old head into the final year of his deal as they don't want to risk losing him for free next summer.

"'Upa' is an extremely important player for us and one of the most sought-after talents in his position in Europe," Mintzlaff told Bild and added:

"One thing we can assure you of is that we have a very clear understanding with him and his agent that he will not be allowed to leave for free. We can't afford that as a club.

So there are two options for him: Either he will sign a contract extension or he will leave. I am absolutely sure that we will know relatively quickly in which direction it goes," said Mintzlaff.

Upamecano has a €60 million release clause, which expires on June 30, according to Bild.

'Die Roten Bullen' are still hoping to extend Upamecano's contract, but their talks with the player are reportedly on hold at the moment.
