Fantasy Bundesliga tips: Goalkeepers to consider for the 2020/21 season

Need some help with your Fantasy Bundesliga team before the new season kicks off on Friday? Here are the goalkeepers you should consider bringing into your squad.
With the new Bundesliga season just around the corner, we are ready to give you a helping hand with your Fantasy Bundesliga team.

In the first of a series of articles, in which we will be making player suggestions for each position, we take a look at the goalkeepers you should have on your radar when you put together your squad.

As a rule of thumb, it's obviously a good idea to have two starting goalkeepers in your squad even though you can only field one at the time. This is particularly useful if your goalkeepers don't play at the same time, so you can make a substitution after the first one of them have been in action.

It's rarely worth breaking the bank for a premium goalkeeper, so you should consider some of the cheaper options in order to free up funds for expensive assets at other positions.

Budget options:
Mark Flekken looked set for his first season as Freiburg's first-choice goalkeeper after Alexander Schwolow's departure to Hertha BSC. Unfortunately for Flekken, however, he suffered an elbow injury in the warm-up for Freiburg's 2-1 win over Mannheim in the DFB-Pokal on Sunday. Benjamin Uphoff (Freiburg, 2M), who has been signed from Karlsruher SC, played in his absence and could remain between the sticks after Freiburg coach Christian Streich confirmed that Flekken is expected to be out for "several weeks, probably even months". However, Freiburg have reacted to Flekken's injury by bringing in Florian Müller (Freiburg, 4M) on loan from Mainz, so he is certainly in contention to start on Saturday as well.

Filling in for the injured Roman Bürki, Borussia Dortmund's second-choice goalkeeper Marwin Hitz (Dortmund, 3M) played 90 minutes in Monday's 5-0 win over Duisburg in the DFB-Pokal. If Bürki doesn't recover from his hip problem in time for Dortmund's Bundesliga opener against Gladbach on Saturday, Hitz should be in line to start again, so it's definitely a situation worth monitoring.

Gregor Kobel (Stuttgart, 5M) looks like a great bargain pick from the start of the season. VfB Stuttgart start off with an attractive run of fixtures, and playing for a newly-promoted team, Kobel is likely to bag plenty of points for saves.

Andreas Luthe (Union Berlin, 5M) was a popular pick last season and remains a solid option after joining Union Berlin from Augsburg. Just like Kobel, Luthe is likely to make a lot of saves and has a favorable opening schedule.

Mid-range options:
If you want to invest a few million more, you could look at Jiri Pavlenka (Werder Bremen, 7M). Having won all their matches in pre-season, keeping a clean sheet in six out of eight games (including their 2-0 win over Carl Zeiss Jena in the DFB-Pokal), Werder begin the season with a great run of fixtures as they look to improve on their woeful 2019/20 campaign.

Should you want to bring in a mid-range option from last season's upper half of the table, you could pick Lukas Hradecky (Leverkusen, 9M), Kevin Trapp (Frankfurt, 9M) or Koen Casteels (Wolfsburg, 9M). Looking at the first round, it's worth noting that Hradecky and Casteels both play on Sunday evening, so bringing in one of them would give you the opportunity of making a late substitution this time around.

Premium options:
RB Leipzig had the second-best defensive record in the Bundesliga last season only behind Bayern München, and Peter Gulacsi (RB Leipzig, 11M) had a huge hand in that, keeping 10 clean sheets throughout the season.

Should you decide to have a premium goalkeeper in your team, then why not go for the ultimate option? Manuel Neuer (Bayern München, 13M) kept 15 clean sheets in the Bundesliga in the 2019/20 campaign and finished off the season in excellent style in Lisbon as Bayern won the Champions League.
