Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios is set for a lengthy layoff after sustaining a serious injury on international duty with Argentina.

The 22-year-old suffered a fractured bone in his back during Thursday's 1-1 draw with Paraguay after a challenge from Angel Romero.

"We've lost a player for several days or months," said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni after the game, according to Xinhua News Agency.

"I don't know if there was bad intention or not, but there was a blow and VAR didn't intervene. I send Exequiel a big hug. I hope he recovers soon. The group is concerned [for him]."

The 22-year-old has played six games for Leverkusen this season.
