Greuther Fürth sporting managing director Rachid Azzouzi has confirmed reports that 22-year-old centre-back Paul Jaeckel will leave the club to join Union Berlin on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer.

"We were informed a while ago that this would happen," Azzouzi confirmed to nordbayern.de.

"It will be difficult for us if a player develops well. Union Berlin is a super attractive club, plus his family live nearby.

"At the end of the day, as a professional footballer, you also consider the money and how attractive the club is."

Jaeckel, a former Germany youth international, has made 16 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga this season. He joined Greuther Fürth from Wolfsburg in 2018.
