There are fears at Schalke 04 that Salif Sané may be forced to hang up his boots due to consistent injury problems, according to Kicker.

The 30-year-old centre-back missed most of Schalke's 2020/21 campaign due to problems with his left knee.

After experiencing new struggles with his knee – the other one this time – Sané has now left Schalke's training camp in Austria to undergo in-depth examinations.

"His knee doesn't have the stability at the moment to withstand maximum stress at the moment," admitted Schalke coach Dimitrios Grammozis.

This means that, at the moment, Sané is unlikely to follow other key players out the exit door following Schalke's relegation from the Bundesliga.

The 30-year-old has one year left on his contract with the Gelsenkirchen club.
