FSV Mainz 05 have confirmed via a statement on their club website that Eric Martel is transferring from 1.FC Köln.

Martel, a regular starter for Köln, will primarily play in defensive midfield but the 24-year-old from Straubing can also play in central defense.

The former German U-21 national team star has a wealth of experience from 90 Bundesliga matches and 31 second division games.

Martel also competed in several UEFA Conference League and DFB-Pokal games for the Cathedral City club over the years.

“Eric is a player who, on the one hand, already brings a wealth of Bundesliga experience and has proven his quality over several years.

"But on the other hand, still has room to develop and has a great drive to improve athletically. We are very pleased that we were able to convince him to do so in Mainz in the future.

“Eric is extremely strong in running and tackling and will also be a great asset to us in terms of character,” said Mainz 05 sporting director Niko Bungert.
