DFB-Pokal: Füllkrug and Reis score debut goals for Bremen in Hamburg

Niclas Füllkrug scored days after completing his transfer back to Werder Bremen as Daniel Thioune’s side progressed to the next round in the DFB-Pokal. The club from Oberliga put on a great defensive performance as they avoided a heavy defeat at Millerntor.
Jens Stage, who is still a candidate for a transfer to balance Bremen’s financial books, was instrumental in the first game of their season after ending last term as the club’s top-scorer with 10 Bundesliga goals.
The Danish international put the Green and Whites in front with a powerful header for the only goal of the first-half. Stage then won a penalty-kick early after the restart as Füllkrug made no mistake from the spot with a calm finish.
The former Germany international finished Bundesliga top-scorer alongside Christopher Nkunku during his first spell in Bremen. There was still time for another new signing to join the scoresheet as Ludovit Reis sealed the victory on his debut.
The former HSV captain was booed by some sections of the fans in St. Pauli’s stadium after his goal. Werder Bremen will open their Bundesliga campaign next week away at Freiburg.
