“He didn’t get that from his dad” – Klopp takes cheeky dig at Bayern legend after Ruben van Bommel’s brilliant assist

Ruben van Bommel played a key role in the Netherlands’ 1-1 equaliser against Germany on Thursday, with the 22-year-old midfielder’s clever pass setting up Cody Gakpo to level the score.

The PSV midfielder subsequently drew praise from Germany coach Jürgen Klopp, who also used the occasion to take a playful dig at the player’s father, Mark van Bommel, who played for Bayern Munich between 2006 and 2011.

“Sensational pass from van Bommel. He didn’t get that from his dad. The outside-of-the-foot technique must come from his mother,” Klopp said with a grin.

Klopp was alluding to the fact that Mark van Bommel, a 79-time Netherlands international, made his name with very different qualities. Tough tackling and aggression were more his trademark than delicate technique and pinpoint passing.
