Hummels on facing Mbappé: "You can only defend against him as a team"

Ahead of Borussia Dortmund's clash with Paris Saint-Germain, Mats Hummels has given his thoughts on how to stop Kylian Mbappé.

Mats Hummels says Borussia Dortmund must defend against Kylian Mbappé "as a team" if they are to silence the Frenchman in Tuesday's Champions League semifinal.

After a 1-0 home win in the first leg, Dortmund will be looking to finish the job on Tuesday and containing Mbappé, however difficult, will be key if they are to book a ticket to the final.

“You can only defend against him as a team,” Hummels said at Dortmund's pre-match press conference on Monday.

“With the inimitable pace he has, he can't be countered on his own. But he's only one part of it; you have to watch out for many others too.”

The last time Dortmund reached the Champions League final was in 2013, when they lost 2-1 to Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.

With Bayern facing Real Madrid in the other semifinal, there is a possibility of a repeat of that final. Hummels, however, is more focused on getting to the final than on who Dortmund would face should they make it that far.

“Of course we want to get to the final. It doesn't matter to us who we meet there. But it will be a great opponent for sure. Both (Real Madrid and Bayern Munich) are probably the most successful teams of the last 20 years.”
