Having recently declared his wish to return to the coaching dugout, Urs Fischer is being heavily linked with the vacant Mainz 05 job.

According to Sky, there has already been initial contact between the parties. However, other candidates are still in the running.

Mainz are currently languishing at the bottom of the Bundesliga table. As a result, coach Bo Henriksen was dismissed on Wednesday

As it stands, U-23 coach Benjamin Hoffmann will take over on an interim basis including tomorrow's game against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

At the club's press conference, Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel announced that the new coach should be presented this weekend.

"We are very, very certain that we have already found a new coach," said Heidel, confident that they've found the right man to take the reins.

Fischer, who stepped down from his position as manager of Union Berlin in November 2023, has been without a job since then.
