RB Leipzig are facing serious questions after suffering a 6-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, with sporting director Marcel Schäfer and head coach Martín Demichelis making no attempt to hide their frustration.
"It was a complete failure on our part in every area," Schäfer told Sky after the defeat. Demichelis was equally blunt: "You can lose here at the Allianz Arena, we know that, everyone knows that. But not like this!"
The Leipzig coach added: "The most important thing is to apologise to our fans who travelled here by car or plane."
Luis Díaz scored a hat-trick, while Aleksandar Pavlovic, Michael Olise and Harry Kane also found the net for Bayern. Andrija Maksimovic scored a late consolation for Leipzig in stoppage time, with goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt preventing an even heavier defeat through several important saves.
Schäfer admitted that his team had been thoroughly outclassed.
"We were simply completely inferior in every area, we had no chance in any area. We had an exceptionally bad day today, and Bayern also had a good one. Accordingly, you have to say that we were actually lucky to get away with just six goals."
Schäfer demands improvement ahead of Real Madrid
Leipzig have little time to recover, with a difficult Champions League fixture against Real Madrid awaiting them on Wednesday. Schäfer made clear that the performance must serve as a warning.
"Today we saw a lesson in what it means to perform at world-class level or top level. And we have a very, very, very large amount of work ahead of us."
Demichelis also called for his players to move on quickly from the defeat.
“There aren't many positives to take from today's game. That's why we have to forget everything we did here today as quickly as possible.”
