Akanji could be out for the season - Dortmund step up their interest in Argentine defender

With Manuel Akanji potentially out for the rest of the season, Borussia Dortmund look to have found his replacement in Argentina.
Borussia Dortmund fear that Manuel Akanji's groin injury could be worse than expected. According to Bild, the centre-back may be in need of surgery which means he could be sidelined for the rest of the season.

"Manuel still has problems. He doesn't fly to the training camp, because specialists in Switzerland and Germany are still to make final examinations," BVB sporting director Michael Zorc told Bild.

However, it seems Dortmund have already identified a potential replacement for Akanji - 19-year-old Leonardo Balerdi who plays for Boca Juniors in Argentina.

According to Argentine TV station TyC Sports, Dortmund have made a €15,8 million offer for the young centre-back after an initial €12 million bid was turned down by Boca Juniors.

Balerdi has made just five appearances for Boca Juniors.
