German record champions Bayern Munich sensationally crashed out of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday night, losing 2-1 to 3. Liga side Saarbrücken in the second round.

In a post-match interview, Thomas Muller admitted that Bayern could have done a lot better.

"There were a lot of situations where we could do better. We simply weren't clever. You have to congratulate Saarbrücken for their fight," Müller said after the final whistle.

"We made some mistakes, but it could have been different," added the veteran, who scored the opener for Bayern.

"The good thing is that we'll be playing again in a few days. Even though it's a brutal blow. It's not our goal to be eliminated in the second round every time. The fans are right to be angry, because they filled their section and we didn't perform."

It's the first time in exactly 23 years that Bayern have been eliminated from the DFB-Pokal by a team from the third division or lower.

The last time this happened was on November 1, 2000, when they were knocked out by FC Magdeburg, who were playing in the fourth tier at the time.
