Gaus the Pokal hero as Saarbrücken defeat Bayern
The 3.Liga side from south-east Germany offered some resistance to enter the dressing rooms level at the break. In what was the shock result of the round, few could have anticipated Saarbrucken’s Marcel Gaus striking in the 96th minute to knock Bayern out on a 2-1 scoreline.
It took all of 16 minutes for Die Reckordmeister to break the deadlock. Given a rare starting berth by Tuchel, 20-year-old Frans Kratzig beautifully picked out Muller. The eagle-eyed German swivelled and fired low inside the left upright from all of 20 yards.
While Bayern bossed the bulk of possession, Saarbrucken dragged themselves level at 1-1 apiece just before the interval. Some slack play from Kim Min-Jae put Kratzig under pressure from the Saarbrucken press. Stehle played Boeder into space who in turn cut it back for Sontheimer who remained composed in the box.
Saarbrucken shot-stopper Tim Schreiber was the busiest of any player after the restart. Twice he was all that stood between Leroy Sane finding the net. It was with 30 minutes left that Tuchel called upon the cavalry – Gnabry, Musiala, and Coman replaced Sarr, Kratzig, and the lively Sane.
But Bayern is not immune to cup shocks. As has been the case in bygone Pokal campaigns, the plucky 3.Liga outfit grew in confidence as did the crowd. In added time Civeja found Marcel Gaus in space on he left. The 34-year-old’s missile-like effort ripped past Manuel Neuer. For Saarbrucken a night to remember as they progress to the next round, and Tuchel’s Bayern to erase from memory.
