Lothar Matthäus on Mario Götze: 'I can't see him joining a top club'

Mario Götze will probably have to take a step down in his career when his contract with Borussia Dortmund runs out at the end of the season, says Lothar Matthäus.
Lothar Matthäus doesn't expect Mario Götze to make the move to a top club when his contract with Borussia Dortmund expires at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has struggled to live up to the expectations following his €22 million move back to Borussia Dortmund from Bayern München in 2016 and will probably have to take a step down in the summer, argues Matthäus.

"I can't see him joining a top club," the former German international told Sky and added:

"Mario has achieved so much and secured the World Cup for us [in 2014]. He had great years at Dortmund and also had his moments at Bayern. But you have to ask: Where is a type of player like Götze in demand?

"He has to take a step down in his career, not just club-wise, but also in terms of salary," Matthäus said.

Götze has started just five Bundesliga games for BVB this season.
