Why Johannes Geis is training with Schalke's under-23 team

Johannes Geis used to be a first-team regular at Schalke 04, but these days, he is training with the club's under-23 team.
After spending a season on loan at Sevilla, Johannes Geis has returned to Schalke 04. During the summer, the 25-year-old was given a chance to impress Schalke coach Domenico Tedesco, but ultimately failed to do so.

Instead, Geis - once a first-team regular at Schalke - has been demoted to training with the under-23 team. According to Tedesco, the decision hasn't been made for disciplinary reasons - there were simply too many players at training.

"We have the feeling that other players are ahead of him at his position. "This wasn't a decision against 'Geisi, but a decision in favor of other players," Tedesco told Reviersport and added that he would rather have one negative conversation than consistently have a surplus of players at training.

With Geis seemingly having no future at Schalke, he has been linked with a summer transfer. But, according to Kicker, the midfielder is expected to stay in Gelsenkirchen as there have been no suitable offers for him during the summer.

Geis joined Schalke from Mainz for €10,5 million in 2015 and has made 61 appearances for 'The Royal Blues' since then.
