Since returning to Borussia Dortmund in 2016, Mario Götze has been much-criticized for not living up to the expectations at Signal Iduna Park.

Now, the 26-year-old is supported by Borussia Dortmund president Dr. Reinhard Rauball who says the criticism isn't justified.

"Mario doesn't deserve to be criticized so much as he is right now. He's a great guy who also possesses high quality," the Rauball told Bild.

Götze has been an unused substitute for Dortmund's first two Bundesliga games this season, but Rauball believes the midfielder can still get to play a role under coach Lucien Favre.

"The question is how Mario fits into the system. If Mario brings his quality back to the pitch, he will help the team with his skills again," the Dortmund president said.

Since returning from Bayern München in 2016, Götze has made 49 appearances for Dortmund with four goals nine assists to his name.
