Timo Werner no longer has a future at RB Leipzig, despite recently returning to the squad and making brief appearances as a substitute.

The former Chelsea striker has been linked with a winter move, with clubs from Major League Soccer reportedly showing interest.

RB Leipzig’s managing director for sport, Marcel Schäfer, believes the 29-year-old should seek a move if he wants more playing time.

“He has always conducted himself professionally and correctly,” Schäfer told Sky after Leipzig’s 1-3 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

“That said, I believe that if he wants more minutes – and we’ve discussed this extensively with him – it may be time for a change.”

With Werner out of contract at the end of the season, the decision ultimately rests with the player.

“If he decides to stay, we will continue working with him as normal, just as we have done so far, because we respect contracts,” Schäfer stressed.
