VfL Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels will not be available to the Belgian national team for the European Championship this summer.

After the final game of the Bundesliga season this weekend, the 28-year-old will go under the knife to remove a plate that he had surgically inserted to support the healing process after sustaining an injury at the beginning of the 2019/20 season.

"Of course it's a pity that I will miss the European Championship. But, unfortunately, no other decision was possible, because the plate has caused me permanent great pain for almost two years," commented Casteels.

"My goal now is to get fit again as quickly as possible after the operation, so that I can start preparing for the new season pain-free."
