Hertha BSC managing director for sport Fredi Bobic believes Matheus Cunha needs to 'change a few things about himself' if he wants to have a successful career in football.

Asked about the 22-year-old's future at Hertha, Bobic told reporters at a press conference:

"I've met with his agent and exchanged ideas with him. It was a good conversation. I told him that I am very happy that Matheus is with us. He is our best footballer. But he needs to change a few things about himself, because otherwise he will have problems in the future, no matter where he plays.

"If he completely commits to Hertha, he's a player we don't have to worry about. If he wants to move on, it will only happen if the price is right. It's simple: either you commit completely and dig in - or you bring up something else that makes sense.

"I had the feeling that the agent thought that was great. That was a clear statement, he can deal with that. And it's not like there are 20 clubs lining up right now."

It's not the first time Cunha has been urged to change his attitude. Back in December, for example, now former Hertha coach Bruno Labbadia blasted the Brazilian attacking midfielder after a 4-1 defeat to Freiburg.

"Somebody felt he could do it all on his own," sneered Labbadia and added:

"We could have taken him off last time against Mainz, but chose not to. Today, we decided to do it because he was abysmal in the first half. He's still young, but something has to change immediately.

"It's unacceptable. He let himself and his team down with his performance. It's very rare that I do something like this, but I'll say it honestly: I'm totally offended."

Cunha's contract with Hertha expires in 2025.
