German football legend Oliver Kahn has confirmed to Bild that he is in talks to buy financially troubled French club Girondins de Bordeaux.

"The talks about a possible takeover of Girondins Bordeaux are at an early stage. There is nothing more to say at the moment," Kahn told the German tabloid.

French daily Sud Ouest had previously reported on Kahn's interest in taking over the club, which was relegated to the fourth tier of French football last summer due to financial problems.

Bordeaux vice-president Arnaud de Carli told the Associated Press that Kahn is in direct contact with Bordeaux president Gerard Lopez, adding that it's unclear at this stage what sort of backing or investors the former Bayern boss would bring with him.

“We tried to find out a bit more about the funds behind. They didn't want to reveal the funds [but] at this stage that's normal. I think they will come back,” De Carli said.
