VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Patrick Wimmer says it will take time for the club to come to terms with what has happened after they were relegated from the Bundesliga following a play-off defeat to SC Paderborn on Monday night.

Wimmer, who was unavailable for both legs due to injury, told Sky Germany:

“The disbelief is written all over the faces of every fan and also us players. There is a great emptiness in the dressing room.

“It will definitely take some time for all of this to sink in. Everyone knows for themselves what has just happened.”

Joakim Mæhle made things hard for Wolfsburg when he saw red just 14 minutes into the game, but Wimmer refused to criticise his teammate.

“He feels just as bad. He knows what happened probably shouldn’t have happened. But I don’t think the whole team should be ganging up on Joakim," Wimmer said, according to AP.

“He’s had a fantastic season since coming back from his shoulder injury and done a great job. He was maybe a bit unlucky today but generally you can see the whole team is lacking in energy.”

The 24-year-old has played for Wolfsburg since 2022.
