Kicker report that Florian Kastenmeier is on the radar of Werder Bremen for the upcoming season. The goalkeeper will be a free agent at the end of this month as a potential contract extension is completely ruled out after Fortuna Düsseldorf’s costly relegation to the 3. Liga.
Bremen’s coach Daniel Thioune was the one who promoted Kastenmeier as captain during his time in Düsseldorf. The 28-year-old shot-stopper has only played in Bundesliga during the 2019/20 season.
Werder Bremen bid farewell to Mio Backhaus as he joined Freiburg for a reported €12 million transfer fee. According to Sky, Karl Hein will be expected to be the starting goalkeeper, similar to the move that promoted Backhaus after Michael Zetterer joined Eintracht Frankfurt.
Kastenmeier is initially planned to be the deputy for the Estonian goalkeeper. The previous link between Thioune and Kastenmeier could be key during the discussions, despite interest from other clubs for the free agent.
